Choosing the style for your kitchen

Your kitchen serves a function and imparts style and design. Style and layout are two separate design functions. As you’ve seen, layout determines where things need to go to be efficient. Style results when you create a visual statement. Door styles, woods, and finishes will play a large part in setting the style of your kitchen. With so many available options, deciding on a kitchen style may seem too difficult a task.

The important first step to finding the design that is right for you is to find a style that appeals to you. When you’re planning the overall look of your kitchen, it’s also a good idea to let the style of your house be a guide. In my opinion a kitchen style that reflects the home’s architecture is an appropriate one. If your house has a definable architectural style — Greek Revival, Craftsman, or Spanish Colonial, for example — the decor you choose for your kitchen should capture that spirit.
